The easternmost ‘cantref’, modern northern Clywd. Cynglas, the son of Owain ‘White-Tooth’ and cousin of Maelgwyn, succeeded the latter in Gwynedd around 549 but his family do not appear to have been able to maintain this claim to the main kingdom. Cadwal may have been killed at the Battle of Chester against Northumbria around 616.
